When a neuro-typical child/adult tries to read or concentrate, he increases the amount of beta waves in certain parts of his brain. People with ADHD don’t do this. Instead of increasing beta waves, they increase theta waves, the daydreaming brainwave. That means that when other people are increasing concentration to complete certain tasks, people with ADHD are drifting off.

Meds Don't Last

When stimulants are taken, the effects last a few hours. As the medicine wears off, the ADHD symptoms return. When children/adults learn to control their brainwaves using neurofeedback, the result is a significant reduction in ADHD symptoms.

The Brain is Retrained

Over a series of 20 or more neurofeedback sessions, a person is gradually taught to inhibit the brain's production of theta waves and increase the brain's use of beta waves. A large number of people can learn to make these changes. As each person learns to adjust their brainwave patterns, they show an improvement in cognition and a reduction in ADHD symptoms and behavior. This symptomatic improvement is similar to what we see with stimulant medication. There is one significant difference, however...

Lasting Results

When a child/adult completes his neurofeedback training and the treatment is successful, he now has a normal theta/beta brainwave ratio, and many or all of his ADHD symptoms disappear. This improvement is permanent. There have been follow-up studies proving this for over a decade. Any gains the person makes stays with him.

Research indicates that ADD children can be differentiated from non-ADD in over 96 percent of cases on the basis of their QEEG signatures.
